Twitter may open source its algorithm next week

Twitter may be about to make its algorithm publicly available as open source software. At least that’s what the social network’s CEO Elon Musk said in a Twitter chat earlier this week. In response to a message from game developer Derek Smart asking Musk to open source it on Twitter, Musk said, “Be prepared to be disappointed at first when our algorithm is open source next week, but it will evolve quickly!”

Even before he bought Twitter in 2022, Musk stated in a TED interview that he was interested in releasing the social network’s algorithm as an open source project, arguing that this would help restore trust on the platform.

Of course, Twitter under Musk has had some problems meeting its own timelines for projects. Earlier this month, it planned to launch a new paid API, but after a lot of backlash from developers, the company announced on February 13 that it would delay the launch for “a few more days”. The company has since said that the launch will be halted in the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, information emerged on the internet that Twitter employees weren’t doing much this week. The Verge reports that Slack channels were shut down Wednesday for “routine maintenance.” However, according to the version, the real reason may be that Musk has ordered the closure of access to Slack, perhaps in an attempt to cut costs. The company’s tracking tool, Jira, also crashed that same day, but was back online Thursday, according to a report. Many Twitter employees reportedly took off Wednesday and Thursday due to issues.
