We expected a lot from Lenovo to tell us at MWC 2023, and now we can say with absolute certainty that the company has delivered, with a good game of news, especially in the ThinkPad family, but also with news in IdeaPad, Yoga and even a working proof of concept that could herald the future of wearables and wearables. Many and very interesting news, which we summarize below.
We’ll start with a proof of concept for a line of research that Lenovo has been working on for some time, rollable OLED screens. And I insist on proof of concept because Lenovo hasn’t indicated that there are concrete plans to bring this technology to market, at least for now. It is clear that they are working in this direction, but we understand that there is still a lot of research work ahead of us before something like this can be offered to users.
At first glance, the prototype shown looks like a regular laptop with a 12.7-inch display and a resolution of 2,024 x 1,604 pixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio. But everything changes with the press of a button that starts the display process signed by Sharp, which changes its geometry until it reaches 15.3 inches with a resolution of 2024 x 2368 pixels in an aspect ratio of 8:9.
Considering that most innovative design, and for the future, let’s look at the equipment designed for the present, starting with this IdeaPad Duet 3i, a more than interesting 2-in-1 device that aims to combine the best of both worlds (notebooks and tablets). It has a generous IPS (touch, bright) LCD display 11.5 inches with a resolution of 2000 x 1200 pointscompatible with 100% of the DCI-P3 color space and can reach a brightness of up to 400 nits.
Another particularly noteworthy aspect is that Lenovo chose to integrate the chips Intel N100 or N200 processorthis means that we will find an integrated Intel Alder Lake-N family that can be accompanied by cfour or eight gigabytes of LPDDR5 memory and 128GB UFS storage or 256GB PCie M.2 SSD. In terms of connectivity, it has WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C ports (one supporting power and data and the other supporting both and also for video output) and an audio minijack connector. And when it comes to autonomy, Lenovo claims to provide a full charge up to 8.5 hours.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Duet 3i will go on sale this month June and its price will start from 499 euros.
We’re still talking about the IdeaPad, but this time we’re dealing with a very interesting Chromebook, as it has some features that we usually associate with more powerful computers. And the first of these we find as soon as we observe it, for I speak of its screen built up 11.5-inch IPS LCD touch panel with FullHD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels in orthodox 16:9 aspect ratio). We can also find a version with a non-touch display, as well as a model whose screen jumps to 14 inches. In addition, it has a hinge that allows rotation up to 170 degrees.
Once inside we find a MediaTek Kompanio 500 SoCAccompanied 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of storage in its entry-level version, although a more advanced version will be available, with 8 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage. The IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook is equipped with WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 and has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, a microSD card reader and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The entire set is powered by a battery that, according to the brand, can offer up to 13.5 hours of autonomy.
The Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 will go on sale this month May and its price will start from 349 euros.
If you’ve been waiting to see some high end, these two devices will undoubtedly satisfy your interest, even if it’s something you’ve probably already imagined if you’re familiar with the first generation of both models. And it’s that both teams deliver great performance (you’ll see it’s obvious when we talk about its specs) without neglecting the needs of mobility and the goal of being a very versatile platform.
The main difference between the two, as their name suggests, is size. The ThinkPad Z13 therefore has a display of 13.3 incheswhile the Z16 makes the leap to 16 inchesin both cases with an aspect ratio of 16:10.
Inside, we see that Lenovo has bet on processors AMD Ryzen 7000 and AMD Radeon 700M series graphics, which is complemented by up to 64 gigabytes of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 2 terabytes of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, so we can expect very high performance from them. In terms of connectivity, they have Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1, two USB-C ports, audio minijack and optional 4G LTE mobile connection. The set is battery powered 51.5 watt hours.
The Lenovo ThinkPad Z13 Gen 2 will be available for purchase from Julywhile the ThinkPad Z16 will hit the market a month later, in August.
The Z13 and Z16 are not the only ThinkPads refreshed in 2023, the X13 and X13 Yoga will also experience a more than interesting evolution that puts them practically on par with the equipment we just saw in the previous section. Both computers share the screen size, 13.3 incheshowever, with the difference that the Yoga model is touchscreen, while the X13 can offer a 2.8K resolution.
Both models will be available with a processor option Intel Core Raptor Lake with Iris Xe graphics and vPro technologybut in addition, the clamshell-style ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 will also be available in a version with a choice of in-line processors AMD Ryzen 7000 and AMD Radeon graphics. They are accompanied up to 32 gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM And until two terabytes of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage.
In the connectivity section, Lenovo opted for WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1 and optional 4G mobile connection. There are also two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB 4 for the AMD model, two more USB 3.2 type A ports, HDMI 2.0 and an audio minijack. And as for autonomy, it will be ensured by batteries between 41 and 54.7 watt hours.
The new Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 and ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 4 will be available in July with prices from 10.190, respectively 1,290 euros.
