Guatemalan pro-government candidate detained at US request

Guatemalan authorities have detained a candidate for municipal councilor from the government’s Vamos party on a request for extradition from the United States for crimes related to drug trafficking.

This is Byron Orellana Veliz, who was arrested on Sunday in the municipality of Guastatoya in the department (province) of El Progreso, located 70 kilometers east of Guatemala City, the Ministry of Public Administration (MP, Prosecutor’s Office) said on Monday.

Orellana Veliz was registered for the elections on 25 June the following year. as an adviser to the municipality of Guastatoya on a list led by his cousin and current mayor Jorge Orellana, a member of the Vamos party that brought Alejandro Giammattei to the presidency in 2019.

According to prosecutors, Orellana Veliz required by the Southern District of Florida for the offense of conspiracy to distribute and traffic cocaine in the United States.

The investigation clarifies that the now detained politician since 2005 acted as intermediary between the Colombian drug trafficking organization and buyers from Mexico and the United States.

Orellana Veliz became the fifth person detained by Guatemala for extradition to the United States in 2023.

Last January, former Interior Minister and analyst Carlos Menocal told EFE that the electoral process in Guatemala would be marked by active participation of candidates linked to the drug trade.

Elections in Guatemala will be held on June 25 and will elect, in addition to the new president, 340 municipal corporations, 160 deputies and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament.
