Teens who see nude photos of themselves floating around online now have the option to take those photos offline. A newly developed program by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) allows photos to be removed from certain social media. The Take It Down tool was funded in part by Meta Platforms, Facebook’s parent company.
Anyone can anonymously submit pictures that are circulating on the internet via the online platform. Photos with minors are then gradually removed. Take It Down creates a kind of digital fingerprint that ends up in a database. Tech giants that have joined the project promise to ensure the images stop circulating online.
Very traumatizing
For now, this affects Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, and the OnlyFans, Pornhub, and Yubo platforms that have joined Take It Down. If an image can be seen on another platform such as Twitter or TikTok, or if it was sent via WhatsApp, for example, it will not be removed for the time being. Even if an image has been edited or has different dimensions, it will not be recognized by the same digital fingerprint.
“Having explicit images online can be very traumatizing, especially for young people,” says NCMEC’s Gavin Portnoy of the new tool.
