BAE Systems introduced the STRIX hybrid and autonomous military unmanned aerial vehicle capable of vertical take-off and landing, which can cover more than 800 km.
As reported by Ukrinform, New Atlas reported this.
Developed in collaboration with Australian company Innovaero, the STRIX folds up to fit in a shipping container that can carry 160kg of cargo over 800km.
The company said the STRIX is a “hybrid, multi-role and multi-role drone” capable of performing tasks such as air-to-ground strikes, continuous reconnaissance, surveillance, or potentially accompanying military helicopters.
It was noted that the drone can be launched and landed vertically without the need for a runway. What’s more, the upward tilt allows it to stand upright on its rear wheels and then lift and descend using only the rear wheels.
“STRIX could be operational as early as 2026 and work is already underway to develop the STRIX prototype,” said Ben Hudson, CEO of BAE Systems’ Australia division.
As reported by Ukrinform, one of the largest aircraft manufacturing companies, Airbus is seeking investors for its high-altitude solar-powered surveillance and communications aircraft program called Zephyr.
