The popular 54-year-old lawyer has been accused of shooting his wife Maggie (52) and their youngest son Paul (22) in their rural home in 2021. South Carolina, where the Murdo family enjoyed great influence.
The prosecution argued that Murdo committed the crime in order to prevent the disclosure of his numerous cases of embezzlement and money laundering.
Murdo himself admitted during the trial that he lied to police about his whereabouts on the night of the crime, but assured that this was due to paranoia caused by drug use, and tearfully denied that he shot at his family.
The judge in charge of the case, Clifton Newman, said he would pass judgment later, according to The New York Times. The minimum sentence for murder in South Carolina, where the trial took place, is 30 years in prison.
The prosecution has already stated that it will ask for a life sentence.
Both the woman and the lawyer’s son were shot several times with a rifle and a shotgun, although no weapon was found, and no bloodstains or other physical evidence were found.
A video recorded by Paul Murdo shortly before his death has been found in which the voices of both parents are heard destroying the original alibi for the lawyer, who claimed he was not in the house at the time of the crime.
By the time he was charged with the murders of two of his relatives, Murdo was already in jail, awaiting trial on over a hundred charges related to his advocacy. EFE
