EU demands release of Nobel laureate Bialiatski after sentence in Belarus

The European Union (EU) this Friday expressed its “concern” about the sentence to ten years in prison belonging human rights activist Belarusian and Nobel Prize 2022, Ales Bialiatskycourt in Minsk, and demanded his release.

“Alarmed” by the verdict, President European ParliamentRoberta Metsola, who reminded in her message that Byalyatsky is also a laureate of the Sakharov Prize, freedom award conscience provided by the European Parliament.

“The politically motivated sentences against Bialiatski and Viasna activists (the public organization he leads) are an insult to justice. I ask for your release“, – said Metsola, adding that the European Parliament “supports a free Belarus.”

For his part, Peter Stano, spokesman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell, told the European Commission’s daily press conference that “we are very closely watching and monitoring what is happening in Belarus.” In particular, he mentioned “all repression continuation from illegitimate regime (President of Belarus Alexander) Lukashenka against political opponents, against independent voices, against civil society activists, human rights defenders and the media.”

The spokesman, who specified that Borrell would later express his opinion on Bialiatski’s conviction in a “very strong” statement, stressed that in the EU “we support civil society in Belarus, we support people“.

The court in Minsk considered guilty Bialiatski and three other human rights defenders from Viasna smugglers, an organized group and sponsor of collective action, serious disorderly conduct.

So he put on them 7 to 10 years old prison, and the prosecutor’s office asked for 9 to 12 years.
