Until now, Light Fidelity or Li-Fi technology, which involves transmitting data using light, remains a technological exotic. However, all things considered, it could soon go mainstream and appear on smartphones and PCs. At MWC 2023, startup pureLiFi showed off a special Light Antenna One antenna that can be embedded in smartphones. This will allow high speed data transfer in the visible light spectrum using LED lamps.

As mentioned, the new antenna is compliant with the upcoming IEEE 802.11bb standard, which will allow them to be integrated into existing 802.11 equipment. At the same time, the samples presented at MWC still look bulky, but the company promises to reduce the size. The company also demonstrated the 5G mmWave repeater, which converts the Li-Fi signal and allows high-speed data transmission.

It should be noted that Li-Fi has advantages as well as disadvantages in the form of high data transfer rates. The most important of these is the need for a direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver, since data is transmitted in the form of a stream of light, not radio waves, which means that a wall or similar obstacle will interfere with transmission. It is not yet known when the first commercial versions of such systems will appear.
