Pure Storage, a global distribution company for storage products, sees significant growth in its product line in the coming years.. By 2026, the Direct Flash Module (DFM) is expected to increase capacity by up to six times, enabling future SSDs to reach approximately 300TB. 3D NAND technology should be one of those responsible for this progress.

Alex McMullan, head of technology for Pure Storage, told Blocks & Files that the expectation for DFM capacity expansion could come ahead of schedule. In order to increase its competitiveness in relation to HD, Pure Storage is already shipping DFM drives in 24TB and 48TB capacities and is expected to announce more capacities during the Accelerate conference.. The company has ambitions to reach 300TB capacity before 2026.

“Our plan for the next few years is to take our competitiveness to the next level. Today we supply DFM drives in 24TB and 48TB capacities. You can expect us to announce even more space at Accelerate while our ambition is to reach 300TB capacity within or before 2026,” said Alex McMullan.

Pure Storage makes custom SSDs for its companies FlashArray and FlashBlade, which make machine-specific memory with U.2 NVMe connectivity. These SSDs use proprietary modules with custom firmware and 3D TLC and 3D QLC NAND. It’s not clear if the capacity increase was a response to business demand or if Pure Storage identified a market opportunity.

What you need to increase the capacity of an SSD

Pure Storage currently uses between 112 and 160 layers in its SSDs. To reach the planned capacity of 300 TB, the company will have to increase this number to about 400-500 layers, working with the most complex 3D NAND chips. Pure Storage expects that there will be no major issues in this process.

Alex McMullan believes that the market itself will become an ally of Pure Storage in the issue of increasing the number of layers in solid state drives. He claims that all component manufacturers plan to work with 400-500 layers over the next five years, which will help the company in some way.

“All component manufacturers are planning a path where they can work with 400-500 layers in the next five years. And all this search will definitely help us, in its own way, ”the company’s technologist emphasized.

Pure Storage predicts a growth in the home PC market, but that doesn’t mean 300TB SSDs will be easy to find in brick-and-mortar stores. Although progress is expected in this sense, it will not be as significant as what is happening in the manufacturing sector.
