Samsung’s decision to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 SoC in its Galaxy S23 has thrown into question the future of the Exynos SoC, as well as the South Korean giant’s plans to continue making its own chips and processors. The reference to processors, not SoCs, and the fact that they will be used in both the Galaxy Book notebooks and Galaxy smartphones is the most interesting part of this information, as it leaves open the possibility that Samsung use a third party to design custom GPUs with which these new processors accompany, which the South Korean company has already done with the Exynos 2200 SoC, a chip that has its own AMD Radeon GPU, namely the Xclipse 920 based on the RDNA2 architecture.

According to the source, Samsung takes its goal of designing its own processors so seriously that it does “speeded up the whole process”, and invests a lot of resources to achieve this. We don’t have specific details, but we can assume that they will be based on ARM architectureand that they will have a personalization layer which will introduce optimizations and performance improvements.

As for the next high-end Exynos chip, everything seems to indicate that Samsung will launch it in 2025, and therefore will be using the Galaxy S25. This new SoC is expected to feature a custom next-gen ARM processor and could come with next-gen Radeon GPUs. Rumor has it that Samsung might change its name to Galaxy instead of Exynos.
