While 5G was only introduced less than 5 years ago, its adoption in countries like the US, Europe and India has only really increased recently. The 5G race continues and with it comes a new era of innovation and transformation in the smartphone industry.
5G technology will open a new era in smartphone technology. The low latency features and improved data upload and download speeds of 5G networks will lead to mass adoption of Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (XR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. These technologies have been around for a while, but they are limited by the capabilities of today’s mobile networks. Thanks to 5G, users can expect a more immersive and interactive experience on their smartphones.
5G will begin to impact the telecommunications industry. Almost all commercial 5G deployments today are based on a non-autonomous 5G network (NSA 5G), which uses new radio technologies but still relies on the network infrastructure. This means telecommunications giants can deploy 5G today by leveraging existing ecosystems and models for mobile broadband and advanced mobile broadband, and augmenting it with stronger cellular networks. In turn, 5G coverage will be larger and wider, meaning smartphones will not only be able to connect to faster internet, but also last longer on faster internet.
Expecting premium 5G smartphone prices to reach $1,000 for millions of customers is putting significant pressure on telecommunications companies’ balance sheets. Up to 10 percent of these may be related to accounts receivable for smartphone usability options. This could lead telecommunications companies to offer more attractive financing options for customers looking to upgrade to a new 5G smartphone. And just to please telecom companies, smartphone companies will also offer more affordable 5G smartphones to the public.
