General Motors plans to create a digital assistant for cars that will use machine learning models similar to those used by ChatGPT. News of the project was first reported by Semafor earlier this week and later confirmed by GM to Reuters. Scott Miller, GM vice president, said ChatGPT will have a presence in all areas of vehicles.
GM is betting that its digital assistant will help drivers in situations where they would normally have to refer to the owner’s manual. For exampleand the tire is flat, the assistant can tell the driver how to change it. In addition, the assistant will be able to integrate with other devices, such as a garage door opener, to provide more convenience for drivers.
GM is working on a significant change that goes beyond the simple development of voice commands. The change means customers can expect their future vehicles to be much more advanced and capable of incorporating innovative technologies, the spokesman said.
“This change is not just about one feature like the evolution of voice commands, but means customers can expect their future vehicles to be much more capable and new overall when it comes to new technologies,” a GM spokesperson said. Reuters.
Semafor said GM’s digital assistant will work differently from other chatbots such as Bing Chat. The automaker is working on adding a “car-specific layer” on top of the larger language models that ChatGPT runs on, in collaboration with Microsoft.
In 2019, GM and Microsoft teamed up to work together on autonomous vehicles. Since Microsoft is the only OpenAI cloud provider, it’s likely that GM’s car assistant will run on Azure. GM has not yet informed Semafor of a name or a possible launch date for the software.
