Apple wants to use high quality OLED panels, which comes with a price tag. The manufacturer wants to pass this on to the customer.

According to the South Korean magazine The Elec, Apple is aiming for a price of between 1,500 and 1,800 US dollars for the new iPad Pro models with OLED screens. The Miniled variant found in tablets today costs an average of $800 to $1,100. The screen size remains the same: 11 inches and 12.9 inches, the same as the previous models.

OLED screens have become very affordable in recent years due to mature production technology, but Apple seems to have very high expectations. Only Samsung and LG can deliver the more expensive panels that pass Apple’s rigorous testing.

A well-known fencing specialist op Twitter agrees with The Elec’s analysis. According to him, the design requirements are so high that the OLED panel is significantly more expensive. “They want a very thin one tandem stack‘, alluding to Apple’s desire to maximize available space internally within the iPad.

Traditional OLED panels in these screen sizes are usually cheaper than the miniLED technology Apple uses today. For the time being, the OLED iPad models are planned for 2024. With a release this far in the future, it goes without saying that we can take the above information with a wheelbarrow of salt. Wait for Apple to share more details in the future.

Yesterday Apple was in the news that the company’s CEO, Tim Cook, wants to see AR glasses headed towards production against the advice of its own developers. The developers would rather wait a few more years. Wait and see if Apple will present the project at its WWDC developer conference in early June.
