Samsung launches the Galaxy A54 5G and the A34 5G. The mid-range models both come with Samsung Knox, but they’re missing one crucial feature.

Samsung introduces the Galaxy A54 5G and A34 5G. The Samsung Galaxy A54 is the most advanced device. For a recommended retail price of 489 euros (incl. VAT), you get a 6.4-inch device with a 120 Hz FHD+ screen. The storage capacity is 128 GB, but if you pay 50 euros more, you also get 256 GB. Either way, you get 8GB of RAM. The memory can also be expanded using a microSD card, so that the additional investment for storage alone is actually not necessary.

Samsung equips the device with three cameras on the back: a 12 MP wide-angle camera, a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization and a 5 MP sensor behind a macro lens. You can make video calls using the selfie camera, which has a 32 MP sensor. The device is powered by an Exynos 1380 processor from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy A34 5G

The Samsung Galaxy A34 5G is slightly larger with a 6.6-inch 120Hz FHD+ screen, but costs a little less with a suggested retail price of 389 euros. For this money you get 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. If you take 70 euros more out of your wallet, you get 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. This internal memory can also be expanded via microSD.

The cameras are of slightly lower quality than those of the Galaxy A54. The sensor of the wide-angle lens is only 8 MP, the main camera is 48 MP. A macro lens is missing. Up front you get a modest 13 MP selfie camera. Inside is a slightly lighter MT6877V Dimensity 1080 SoC from MediaTek.

Professor Goebelin

Both devices are equipped with Android 13 and come with Samsung Knox. Both have a 5,000 mAh battery. In a Professor Gobelijn moment, Samsung speaks of 25 watts fast chargingwhile the manufacturer of course uncompetitive slow loading mean.

25 watts is excruciatingly slow for smartphones in this price range and means that you can’t actually charge this device in between. Most other phones in this price range fare better. Two years ago, for example, OnePlus introduced 65-watt charging in the OnePlus Nord 2, which at the time of launch was already in the same price range as these devices are now.
