Overall, Samsung has now registered 14 patents. Work begins immediately towards a working prototype.
Smartphone batteries today are made of lithium ions or lithium polymer. Both technologies have their limitations but are the gold standard today. Samsung is looking to the future by manufacturing a prototype with a solid-state battery, according to Wccftech. The smartphone giant has already registered 14 patents.
Anyone expecting a smartphone with a solid-state battery to be on the market next year will have to be disappointed. Samsung is still in an early stage of development. It could easily be three to six years or more before the technology debuts in a smartphone.
Samsung isn’t the only one working on this technology. It is a big challenge to realize this concept within a small battery. Still, it’s worth going down this route because solid-state batteries are much safer than the existing batteries in smartphones. They are non-flammable and can store more energy in the same area. Result: smaller devices or a longer battery life in the current format.
The technology shows promise, but even if there is a working prototype, the work is not done yet. Solid state batteries are currently extremely difficult to manufacture on a large scale. In addition, they still have to be tested under numerous conditions with different stress levels in different devices. There is still a long way to go.
Don’t expect a solid-state battery in your future smartphone anytime soon, but it’s certainly good news that Samsung is putting its shoulders under the technology. Wait and see when the company will show its first prototypes to the public sometime in the coming years.
