Linus Media Group hacked YouTube channels and sparked a coup

This Thursday morning (23) popular YouTube channel Linus Technical Tips was hacked, and the 15.3 million channel subscribers saw the video of the cryptocurrency scam instead of the technical equipment reviews. This is the latest incident in a series of high-profile YouTube accounts that have been hacked, with scammers regularly accessing known accounts in order to rename them and stream live videos of the cryptocurrency scam.

In addition to hosting live streams, the hackers have also begun making old public videos private. After a few hours, the account ended up being suspended, presumably while YouTube employees work to restore it. Hackers attacked not only the main channel with more than 15 million subscribers. Secondary and equally popular TechLinked and Tech Quickie channels with 1.8 million and 4.2 million subscribers were also hacked.

The hackers who have taken over the group’s channels are now promoting a live-streamed cryptocurrency scam involving Elon Musk.

It’s not immediately clear how the channels were hacked, but owner Linus Sebastian tweeted that he was aware of the situation. YouTube has not yet commented on this issue.

History of hacked channels

Over the past few years, YouTube has been the target of a number of cyberattacks that compromise popular channels. Hackers use phishing and account takeover techniques to spread fraudulent content. Last year, Vevo, British Army, and Apple channels were compromised to promote cryptocurrency scams.

Recently on channel Adrenalin YouTube has also been targeted by hackers. On March 19, 2022, the channel was hacked and the videos were replaced with live streams of the crypto scam. The channel, which has more than 2.5 million subscribers, returned to the air only five days later, when the owners managed to regain control of the account.

These attacks show the vulnerability of digital security systems and the importance of using strong passwords and two-factor authentication. It is imperative that companies and users are always prepared for possible threats and take preventive measures to protect their information. In addition, platforms like YouTube need to take stricter measures to keep their users safe and prevent the spread of fraudulent content.
