SAP: “Localization and new technology should defuse supply chain crisis”

According to research, Belgian companies are struggling en masse with problems in their supply chain. More localization appears to be an important part of the solution, not as a new technology.

72 percent of Belgian companies plan to introduce new technologies in the next one to two years to improve their supply chain. This is the result of a study by SAP. The improvement is necessary: 84 percent of our companies state that the logistics supply chain has weak points. This leads to delays in the production of goods and services and a shortage of raw materials.

Half of companies don’t expect current supply chain issues to just go away. Half think they will last at least until the end of the year. The energy crisis and the war in Ukraine are cited as important factors.

In addition to new software, companies in Belgium are looking for more localization. All respondents see the value of this track. They believe the government should help. This shows a clear shift in vision. Where not so long ago supply chain management was an exercise in efficiency and cost reduction, resilience is now becoming an important factor.

SAP saw that there were opportunities for a software specialist, but the company is not alone. At the end of last year, Microsoft announced the Supply Chain Platform, a solution designed to help companies get a better grip on their supply chain, and Google and AWS also see a role in it for the large hyperscalers.
