iPhone 15, goodbye to SIM cards in Europe?

In the absence of almost six months until the introduction of the iPhone 15, we continue to receive rumors and leaks about Apple’s next generation smartphone. Again, as we’ve experienced in past years, it looks like we’ll already have a fairly accurate portrait of what Apple is trying, again unsuccessfully, to keep secret until the day of the presentation, which will take place on a Tuesday between early and mid-September, maybe the 5th, maybe 12th or at the latest (and I’d be surprised if there isn’t some problem in the mass production process) 19th.

The latest news we’ve had so far in this regard is related to the possible jump from steel to titanium and the transition from two to a single volume control button on the Pro models, the expected transition to USB-C , Dynamic Island in all models … in this complete post, you can find a complete selection of the most notable ones, with thoughts on these rumors and whether or not it makes more or less sense to implement these changes.

Now a new rumor has been added, very interesting and also fits Apple’s policy quite well. How we can read in iGeneration (in French and behind a paywall) all iPhone 15 models will not have a SIM card tray, so they can only be used with an eSIMa technology that Apple has been betting on for some time and which it considers more secure than the traditional SIM cards that we have become accustomed to since the debut of GSM mobile telephony (remember that before the line was connected to the terminal in a permanent way).

iPhone 15, goodbye to SIM cards in Europe?

Given that, the move isn’t too surprising The iPhone 14s sold in the United States also does not have a SIM card slot, a change that may seem very bold at first glance, but seems to have gone down well with its users, given the good sales numbers of the current generation in the country. Given this success, it seems likely that Apple has decided to export this innovation to other markets.

The news specifically mentions France, which prompts us to consider two possibilities:

  1. Said medium alludes to its country of origin, but the change would affect all of Europe.
  2. Apple is aware of the peculiarities of European markets and is considering the first test on this side of the Atlantic in only one or a few countries.

Personally, I lean more towards the first option, partly because, given that the American experience was undoubtedly successful they will look forward to expanding eSIM exclusive use to the rest of the world as soon as possible by getting the iPhone 15 to be used in as many geographies as possible. And secondly, because given the peculiarities of the French market, it does not seem to be the best option to conduct a test in this regard.

Although there are still quite a few users who are reluctant to replace their physical SIM card with its electronic version, the truth is that configuring an eSIM is a really simple process, and after configuration, its operation is similar to that of a traditional SIM cardonly with the difference that it does not have a memory for storing contacts, a function that is almost not used anymore, since their management in smartphone operating systems is much more complete.
