Japan’s NEC Corp. has developed technology based on artificial intelligence that can predict where mines are most likely to be buried with around 90% accuracy.

As reported by Ukrinform, this was reported by Kyodo News.

Technology can contribute to more effective detection of anti-personnel mines and reduce the annual number of deaths from their explosions.

The Japanese company said it aims to provide mine location prediction services to governments and international organizations by March 2024.

In a technology trial in conflict zones in Asia between April and October last year, the NEC used open data on sights and military sites and reports from local residents provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross to successfully estimate where it was. buried mines in certain areas.

Thanks to the new technology, the time required to scan 800 sites for possible locations where landmines are hidden can be reduced from a few years to a few hours.

NEC also said it aims to further improve the speed and accuracy of its forecasts by combining various sources of information, including data collected from drones and satellites.

According to the NEC, at least 5,554 people worldwide were killed in 2021 by the remnants of war – landmines and cluster bombs – most of them civilians.
