Microsoft introduced the GPT-4-based Bing chatbot a while back, and understandably, it has garnered a lot of attention around the world. First, Microsoft recently announced that it has reached a significant milestone with Bing, exceeding 100 million daily active users. After releasing the latest build, the company saw that a third of its daily active users were new to the search engine. Almost a week ago, the company introduced a new AI-based Image Creator for the Bing search engine. Despite all this, Microsoft has so far taken care not to place any ads on the Bing chat page. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, recently said that ads will soon start appearing in Bing chat.
However, the ad will not be too intrusive. Debargi Das’ tweet sheds light on the company’s plans to monetize its new search engine, and it’s not what you’d expect. Ads will be displayed when a user searches for a particular product, which means that the bias will not directly affect users. This means you won’t be bombarded with random or targeted ads without looking for them. See how the ad looks in this tweet:
Bing Chat now has Ads!
It will be fascinating to see how Ads in language models will evolve the unit economy and impact search advertising.

As DeBarge pointed out in a tweet, it’s not possible to directly compare conversion rates with these ads because they are based on a user’s current searches, not their past searches. This could be an important step towards changing the way AI-powered search advertising works in the future. It’s worth noting that while Bing’s search engine originally featured ads, Bing ChatBot is a completely different entity for the company. Mehdi’s blog post shows that Microsoft plans to share ad revenue with partners who directly contribute content to a chat response to a user tip. However, it remains unclear how Microsoft plans to strike a balance between advertising and non-ad responses. One thing is for sure, the inclusion of advertising will make the task of determining the authenticity of this answer even more difficult.
