BAE Systems successfully tested a long-range guided missile

In partnership with the US Army, BAE Systems successfully fired a long-range, lethal sub-caliber artillery projectile from the 155mm XM907E2 58 cannon, our concept for the US Army’s XM1155 sub-caliber program, hitting a fixed target beyond the ranges previously demonstrated by other precision projectiles…the same type gun fired.

Testing at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico used a US Army-developed sabot package and confirmed compatibility with the 155mm Extended Range Artillery Howitzer (ERCA) test stand and metal payloads. “This successful test confirms that our high lethality long-range sub-caliber artillery shell can hit long-range targets and continues further testing to double the range of the current guided missile and uses sensors to locate stationary and moving targets of interest.” Brent, vice president and general manager of weapons systems at BAE Systems, said Butcher.

“We are confident that this projectile is well on its way to providing the Army with the best forward hopping gun ammunition solution, bringing an extremely deadly, maneuverable projectile to soldiers on the battlefield.”

Our US Army program concept, the XM1155-SC, is an advanced weapon-launched projectile designed to attack fixed and mobile targets in harsh environments with more than twice the range of current gun-launched munitions (PGMs). The newest PGM in the Hypervelocity Projectile munitions family, our concept is designed to penetrate and destroy enemy defenses with increased range, improved targeting, lethality and survivability. The projectile is aimed at achieving the goals of modernizing the military to create high-precision long-range munitions.

Over the past few years, BAE Systems has invested in the innovation, development and testing of advanced long-range firing solutions and has completed more than 100 PGM trials. In early 2022, BAE Systems’ hyper-velocity extended-range projectile (HVP-ER), the predecessor of our XM1155-SC concept, successfully hit a target 110 kilometers away. BAE Systems is currently under a contract with the US Army to develop and test the projectile as part of the Army’s XM1155 extended-range artillery shell program. Source
