According to Google, the 5 million file limit only applies to the number of files created in Drive, not the total number of files you share in your Drive. This means that you can have over 5 million files on your system, unless they are created by you.

A Google spokesperson said the change happened in “mmaintain high performance and reliability“and what it should help prevent”abusefrom the company’s systems. If you reach the limit, the rep said you’ll get a notification and can contact Google support to resolve the issue.

The limit is already in effect.

While 5 million may seem like an absurd amount of files to upload by one person, some users have actually reached that limit. A Reddit user with 7 million files in Drive reported that Google suddenly banned them from creating new files in February even though they didn’t reach the 2TB storage limit they pay for. Several other users on the Google issues site claim to have encountered a file limit around the same time and initially thought it was a bug.

As stated in the Reddit post, the file limit means that someone with 2TB of storage and an average file size of over 400KB will hit the file limit before they even run out of storage space. In other words, some users may be paying for more storage space than they can actually use unless they choose to zip their files into zip folders.

It appears that Google failed to warn those affected by the new restriction before it went into effect, resulting in them having to move or compress the extra files. In addition, Google has not updated its Google One or Workspace support pages to comply with the limit, although it states that Workspace Shared Drives can store no more than 400,000 files. While most people probably don’t have 5 million files stored in Drive, Google could at least give adequate warning to those who do.
