It looks like Apple has discontinued the M2 chips that power the current generation of the PC lineup. It was stated that the reason for the termination of production of these chips was allegedly the decrease in Mac sales.
According to a new report, the Cupertino-based giant is cutting back on production of custom M2 chipsets, as well as halting their production altogether for two months. The move was made due to low demand for Mac models. Although reports claim that this has already happened in January and February, the iPhone maker has not officially confirmed that it is currently suspending production of the chips.
Apple is believed to have resumed M2 production in March, albeit at half the rate of last year. According to the company’s supply chain reports, the company’s third-party suppliers were affected by the move. Apple and main chip supplier TSMC did not respond to the rumors. However, Elec was able to track down other suppliers who were able to provide details about the discontinued production.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said on his first-quarter earnings call that the year-over-year decline in the first quarter was in line with expectations due to various constraints in the market. We also faced a difficult macroeconomic environment and currency challenges. We are confident and focused on the long-term future for Mac.”
