Samsung is preparing to rename its Samsung Free content aggregator feature to Samsung News. The new name reflects an increased focus on news content and a move away from View and Play tabs. Samsung News will combine Read and Listen tabs to provide an updated experience that will make it easier for users to find and interact with news on their phones.

The feature, which first came pre-loaded on Galaxy S21 flagships with One UI 3 in late 2020, aims to compete with Google Discover. Samsung News will provide users with the latest news by simply swiping the home screen.

This update is a clear indication that Samsung wants to compete with Google Discover and establish itself as a major player in newsgathering. It will be interesting to see how Samsung News is received by users and whether it can successfully compete with popular content aggregator Google.

The update will be released sequentially from April 18, starting with version 6.0.1 of the Samsung Free app. Samsung will continue to offer free TV and games through its TV Plus and Game Launcher apps, but with the removal of the Watch and Play tabs, it’s clear the company wants to focus on news content. This move could potentially attract more users to Samsung News as it offers a more fluid and focused approach to news gathering.
