Google will support Chrome Apps by January 2025. The applications are now being replaced by Progressive Web Apps.
Google is parting with its own Chrome apps. As early as 2020, Google stopped accepting new public applications in the Chrome Web Store. Private applications from companies continued to be supported. This should remain so until at least January 2025, says Google. The final end of support period for the applications has therefore been pushed back following feedback from business users.
Google notes that Chrome apps never really broke through. The future belongs to the more popular and modern Progressive Web Apps (PWA). The company therefore encourages developers to switch their applications to PWAs as soon as possible. Technology has more options, is more reliable and allows you to reach more people, it sounds like that.
As browser-centric applications, Chrome apps are only compatible with Chrome. PWA is a widely supported technology that makes applications browser independent. In fact, since its inception in 2010, the technology has become obsolete.
It is very understandable that Google wants to exceptionally end its support. The company can send its own services and applications to the grave like no other, despite previous promises, but this story is an exception. Google communicates deadlines well in advance and is right that PWAs are the way to go.
