Samsung and AMD have decided to renew a patent licensing agreement that allows the former to use the graphics architecture of the latter, which, as many of our readers will remember, resulted in Xclipse 920, a graphics core based on the RDNA2 architecture which was used in the Exynos 2200 SoC.
The said SoC did not have the expected success and The GPU was also not up to the task, but that didn’t stop Samsung from renewing that deal with AMD, which is obviously a statement of intent. If you’re wondering what Samsung is up to, I think the answer is pretty simple, it will continue to use AMD’s graphics architectures to build its own custom SoCs.
That means Samsung hasn’t thrown in the towel with its high-end Exynos chips, and that it aims to re-release a top-of-the-line chip when the time is right. This new SoC is likely to be equipped with GPU based Architecture of RDNA3though ultimately it will all depend on the release date and what AMD has in the market at the time.
The South Korean company confirmed in an official statement that this deal is to bring “console-level graphics for the mobile sector”. It also wants to optimize the user experience and make it more impressive and durable. Again, Samsung talked about ray tracing on mobile, a very demanding technology that, frankly, I don’t think will be easy to use on a mobile device.
For its part, AMD said it was thrilled that Samsung had chosen its Radeon graphics solutions “the next generation of Exynos solutions”. This is important because it directly confirms what we have been telling you for the past months, that Samsung has not given up and will continue to launch high-performance Exynos SoCs.
The question we’re now asking ourselves is whether Samsung’s next chip equipped with a RDNA3 GPU, will arrive in 2024 or if it will leave in 2025. We have nothing officially confirmed, so for now all we can do is wait. However, if the company decides to wait until 2025, it’s likely that AMD will have its architecture ready by then. rDNA4, so it would no longer make sense for Samsung to release SoCs with previous generation GPUs.
