A new drone has appeared on the battlefield. Only six months, the video he made is still private. Unlike armed drones that carry weapons under their wings, launch and return to base, the Switchblade kamikaze drone carries its own warhead and detonates itself, destroying tanks, armored vehicles and artillery nests.

Currently, 700 Switchblades, large and small, are being sent to Ukraine for use against the Russians. “We understand what people are doing in Ukraine. That’s part of our help,” said John Aldana, Switchblade’s program manager.

He explained to CBS News Homeland Security correspondent David Martin why the drone, a rocket in a folded-wing launcher, is called the Switchblade: “It fits the tube. Below we have what is known as the gas generator. It starts the Switchblade. As soon as it comes out of the tube, the wings are automatic. It opens as a scissors and happens very quickly, like a scissors blade.

There are cameras on the nose that scan the battlefield and send video from the tablet to the operator controlling the Switchblade.

“Once it finds the target, the operator has the opportunity to aim the bomb at the target and hit it,” said Aldana. “This is a one-sided mission.”

Switchblades are already loading for Ukraine. “We maintained communication with the Ukrainian army,” Nawabi said. “They can use thousands of them. The type of conflict they face today is almost ideal for Switchblade’s abilities.”

He’s talking about long Russian convoys creeping into the front line. “The Switchblade can literally destroy them like popcorn,” he said.
