Possible cause of stingray death: trawling

Biologist Ricardo Gomez of the Instituto Mar Urbano argued that the lack of other dead species on the beach indicated that the incident was likely not caused by pollutants or a lack of oxygen in the water.

“This makes the trawling hypothesis more obvious in the case of these beams,” he said.

What is trawling?

Trawl fishing is a way of catching fish, which consists in dragging the net across the water behind one or more boats.

“This is not the (native) place of the stingray, so it’s strange even for the people who live here and live off the fishing,” said conservationist Isabeli Delois.

“Something very bad happened.”

Hundreds of stingrays are mutilated in Sonora to “protect tourists”.

On April 6, it was announced that due to the expected influx of tourists on the beaches of Huatabampo, Sonora, the municipal authorities decided to remove their sting from hundreds of rays under the pretext of “protecting tourists.”

Elizabeth Guerrero Moreno, environmental coordinator, also justified the decision, arguing that these marine animals do not get hurt because their stingers regenerate over time, according to local media.

This the decision was criticized by environmental organizations and activists, who filed a complaint with the Federal Attorney for the Environment (Profepa) against this act animal cruelty.

Environmentalists also denounce the practice in Huatabampo as a cruel habit. For four years now, there has been a petition on Change.org with over 10,000 signatures to stop the mutilation of the rays.
