SpaceX’s massive new Starship has been launched to Mars in a stunning new video showcasing the ambitions of Elon Musk’s deep space vision. The 5-minute animation, which SpaceX posted to YouTube on Monday, April 10, begins with a look at Starbase, the company’s Gulf Coast facility in Texas. About a minute later, the Starship takes off from shore.

The video then shows the Starship’s 33-engine first stage, Super Heavy, returning to land on its orbital launcher. The accelerator is installed slowly, leaning against the “bars” of the launch tower. Meanwhile, the top of the 165-foot (50-meter) Starship rendezvous with an Earth-orbiting tanker loading fuel for the long voyage to Mars.

The Starship arrives safely at about the same time as the other three ships, which together form four bright lines in the dark Martian sky.

The animation ends with a view from inside the newly landed Starship. Its hatch opens and four spacesuit passengers gaze at the lit Red Planet landscape that surrounds a large domed habitat.

This is the mainstay of humanity on Mars, whose animation universe was undoubtedly largely established by the efforts of Starship. According to SpaceX, this massive vehicle will be the most powerful rocket launched almost twice. And it’s designed to be completely and quickly reusable, an invention that Elon Musk believes will make audacious spaceflights like colonizing Mars economically feasible.
