On Tuesday (November 11), the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) of the US Department of Commerce issued a request for comment (RFC) on the responsibility of AI.

Through the RFC, the public is invited to share any thoughts, concerns, or feedback on AI-related policies. Specifically, the NTIA is looking for ideas that could support the development of “audits, evaluations, certifications, and other assurance mechanisms in AI systems,” according to the website.

How will the process go

The RFC will close on June 10, 2023, 60 days after the initial announcement. All collected data will be shared with the Biden administration by the NTIA to help develop policies to keep users safe when using AI.

The NTIA said in a statement that just as food and cars are regulated in terms of safety, AI models should also be regulated.

Responsible AI systems can bring enormous benefits, but only if we eliminate their potential consequences and harms. For these systems to reach their full potential, businesses and consumers must be able to rely on them.said NTIA Administrator Alan Davidson, who is also Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information.

This follows President Joe Biden’s meeting last week with the President’s Council of Science and Technology Advisers, where he discussed AI and the importance of keeping AI models safe for users.

And so technology companies, in my opinion, have an obligation to make sure their products are safe before they go public.” Biden said.
