The White House recalls that, according to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), xylazine overdose deaths increased by 1127% in the South of the country between 2020 and 2021, 750% in the West, over 500% in the Midwest, and over 100% in the Northeast.

Studies by the NIH have shown that xylazine is often added to illicit opioids, including fentanyl, and people report that taking fentanyl leads to contains xylazine to “extend the euphoric effect”.

Most overdose deaths are associated with xylazine and fentanyl other substances are also includedincluding cocaine, heroin, benzodiazepines, alcohol, gabapentin3, methadone and prescription opioids.

Xylazine, also known as a tranquilizer, is a central nervous system depressant. can cause drowsiness, amnesia and reduce breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure to dangerously low levels, warns the NIH.

Taking opioids in combination with xylazine and other central nervous system depressants such as alcohol or benzodiazepines. increases the risk of a “potentially fatal overdose”.

White House Drug Policy Director Rahul Gupta indicated that with this designation Joe Biden administration is “active” in its quest to save lives and create new tools for public health and safety.
