The country’s government said Russian hackers were trying to “disrupt or destroy” critical infrastructure in the UK.
As Ukrinform reports, Sky News reports this.
The UK’s National Center for Cyber Security has issued an official statement citing the threat to operators of the country’s electricity, water supply and other critical systems and ordering these operators to strengthen their protection capabilities.
“I don’t think we’re doing enough at the moment to protect our infrastructure from cyber threats from Russian-linked groups,” said Linda Cameron, director of the centre.
Cabinet minister Oliver Dowden said the threat came from hackers sympathetic to Moscow, although not controlled by the Russian state.
He said that while the hackers in question were not capable of causing major damage to UK infrastructure, the threat was growing.
“Disclosure of this threat is something we take lightly,” Dowden said, adding that “companies need to be aware of the risk and take steps to protect themselves and the country.”
Russian hackers reportedly gained access to private security cameras in Ukrainian coffeehouses to gather intelligence on passing humanitarian convoys.
In February, pro-Russian hacker group NoName057 carried out DDoS attacks on a number of Italian companies and institutions on the occasion of Italian Prime Minister Giorgi Meloni’s visit to Kiev.
In March, the same group attacked Italian government facilities, including the lower house of parliament and several ministries, as 20 Ukrainian military personnel recently trained in SAMP-T air defense systems in Italy.
