The British Royal Mail has chosen the leading airline company Skyports for deliver drones to the Orkney Islands, an archipelago located in Scotland. The Orkney I-Port drone delivery project will undergo a three-month testing phase.

If the project proves successful, Royal Mail intends to extend it permanently. The initial phase of Orkney I-Port will receive a grant from the UK Department for Transport Freight Innovation Fund. proposal to create a sustainable shipping model for the islands of the archipelago. Skyports will oversee the delivery of Royal Mail letters and parcels destined for Orkney’s main postal facility, located in the city of Kirkwall. Upon arrival, The company’s drones will be responsible for delivering orders to other distribution locations.which is currently operated by ferries.

This is not the company’s first project in Scotland. Skyports is also responsible for delivering Royal Mail to other locations outside of the company’s main routes. According to the company, the program Orkney I-Port is expected to be operational from the second quarter of 2023.offering time savings, cost savings and better connectivity to residents of the various islands in the region.

“Rural and maritime logistics depend on access, climate and personnel; if any of these factors are compromised, it will affect the ability to provide safe and reliable services,” says Skyports Director of Drone Operations, Alex Brown. Orkney is a hard-to-reach region that is about to benefit from drone operations, Brown said. “We look forward to showing how our flights can improve existing services on the island, improve communications for residents and support the Orkney Postal Service.” on orders from Kirkwall, which should significantly speed up mail delivery.
