Google is reportedly developing generative AI tools for businesses to automate ads. According to Google, AI can create campaigns that are as good or even better than professional marketing agencies.

The artificial marketing tools are added to the Google Ads platform for Performance Max campaigns. The tech giant even gave a presentation to companies that are on the advertising platform to warm them up to AI-generated advertising, the Financial Times knows. The tools Google plans to develop will be based on the same models as Bard and can provide detailed insights into campaign scores, in addition to creating ads with images and text.

According to Google, AI is capable of creating “sophisticated” ads that are indistinguishable from what a professional marketing team would develop. There is, of course, the thorny issue of hallucinations caused by AI systems. Google can talk about it because the AI tool itself went wrong with the ads about Bard. The AI will rely on the company’s past campaigns to prevent the ads from containing and spreading false information.

“AI has been fundamental to our advertising business for over a decade. We help our partners show potential customers the most relevant ads. We continue to explore how AI can transform advertisers’ existing assets to make their campaigns as impactful as possible,” a spokesperson told The Register.

AI and advertising: a dream combination?

It only seemed a matter of time before generative AI found its way into advertising and vice versa. The capabilities demonstrated by modern tools like ChatGPT can of course also be interesting for advertisers to develop campaigns faster. And the tech companies, for which advertising is an important source of income, also earn something back from their expensive investments in the development and training of the AI models.

In addition to Google, Meta is also set to build an AI advertising platform. Microsoft doesn’t appear to have any such plans for now, though OpenAI’s godfather isn’t blind to advertisers’ interests (and money). For some time now, advertising messages have also been appearing in chat conversations with Bing in order to prevent them from being stuck in the search results due to the use of the chatbot.
