Cygnus spacecraft will burn in Earth’s atmosphere

The Cygnus spacecraft has successfully departed the International Space Station after delivering 8,200 pounds of material and will burn safely in Earth’s atmosphere and undergo a planned destructive reentry.

At 07:22 ET, the Northrop Grumman Cygnus spacecraft was released from the Canadarm2 robotic arm, which had previously separated Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the International Space Station’s Unity module. At the time of its release, the station was flying southwest of Ireland.

The Cygnus spacecraft successfully left the space station five months after arriving at the Microgravity Laboratory to deliver approximately 8,200 pounds of materials, research, commercial products, equipment and other cargo for NASA.

After firing its engine from orbit on Friday night, Cygnus will begin its planned destructive re-entry, while the spacecraft filled with debris packed by the station crew will burn safely in the Earth’s atmosphere.
