A mysterious creature with many eyes has been found in China. It turned out to be a new species of box jellyfish, The Mirror reported. Scientists from the University of Hong Kong have discovered a new subspecies of poisonous box jellyfish from the class Cnidaria, found in the Mei Po nature reserve. Researchers named it Tripedalia maipoensis in honor of where it was discovered. This is the first box jellyfish discovered in Hong Kong and China.

Individuals of this species have numerous eyes, a small body about three centimeters long and three tentacles. The 24 eyes are divided into four groups of six, each group is located in a separate sensory pit called the rhopalium. They are located on different sides of the jellyfish dome. In the group, it can only transmit a picture from both eyes, the others are only sensitive to light. The tips of the tentacles of these jellyfish have a paddle-like shape. This feature allows them to move faster than other jellyfish. The body of the new species of box jellyfish is transparent and colorless.

These jellyfish are similar to box jellyfish previously found in Jamaica, Florida, Australia and India. Cube jellyfish are dangerous to humans. Their venom can be deadly. In Australia, special nets are stretched on the beaches to protect people from bites.
