69 percent of Belgians surveyed (59 percent globally) believe that people are leaving their company because they have not been able to innovate as much as they had hoped.

Dell Technologies recently commissioned a survey of the innovation status of companies worldwide. A total of 6,600 organizations took part, including 100 Belgian ones. In general, Belgian companies are cautiously optimistic about the strength of their business and innovation:

  • 67% (84% globally) agree their company has a vibrant culture of innovation.
  • 85% (79% globally) of Belgian companies agree that their company is well insulated from economic fluctuations.

However, there is a gap between the perception and implementation of innovation:

  • Only 17% (18% globally) of Belgian organizations are defined as innovation leaders and adopters.
  • 65% (64% globally) agree that certain aspects of their organizational culture prevent them from being as innovative as they would like to be.

It is important to close the gap between perception and implementation of innovation:

  • Companies defined as Innovation Leaders and Adopters are 2.2x more likely to accelerate innovation in challenging economic conditions.

Rising cloud costs as an obstacle

The study also examines where organizations are finding benefits and barriers by looking at five technology catalysts for innovation: multicloud, edge, modern data infrastructure, work anywhere, and cybersecurity. In almost every domain, complexity is the number one barrier to unlocking this potential.

These issues are reflected in the most commonly cited global technology barriers to innovation:

  • Rising cloud costs
  • Difficulties in integrating the overall business architecture with the IT infrastructure architecture
  • Time and money spent migrating apps to new cloud environments
  • Cyber Threats: Inability to innovate with data and insecure edge devices
  • Lack of IT infrastructure to process data at the edge
