The Taliban killed the leader and responsible for the 2021 Kabul (Afghanistan) airport attack that killed 180 people, including 13 US soldiers.

The information was passed on by US officials to relatives of the victims and in media interviews.

At the moment, the name of the person killed has not been released, but it is reported that an investigation is underway to determine his responsibilities.

“Government experts have full confidence that this individual bears the primary responsibility,” a senior US official told CBS News.

The same official confirmed that this was an operation independent of the Taliban in which the United States did not participate or cooperate, and that confirmation of his death was intelligence work in the area.

The Islamic State leader’s death was reported after US President Joe Biden announced his candidacy in the 2024 presidential election, although the administration itself assured that this was a “coincidence” and that it was in no way part of the election campaign.

The attack took place on August 31, 2021 in the midst of an operation to evacuate foreign citizens and civilians in Afghanistan after the arrival of the Taliban a few days earlier in Kabul, where they entered without resistance from the Afghan security forces. The authorship is claimed by the IGKP, the branch of the Islamic State in Afghanistan.

After the attack, an American drone attacked the position where the leader of the group was allegedly hiding. ispalthough the Pentagon later confirmed that ten civilians were killed, including seven children.
