A Google Cloud data center in Paris was flooded. As a result, cloud services are still severely disrupted.
On the status page, Google lists no fewer than ninety applications affected by the disruption. The region affected is europe west9, although Google does not rule out harassment in other regions of Europe. The cloud provider reported the problems for the first time on Tuesday evening around 7 p.m., work is still being done to bring all cloud services back online.
It is now known that water damage in a data center in Paris is the cause of the widespread outage. This resulted in a multi-cluster outage, forcing Google to shut down the hardware to prevent major damage.
water and fire
How the water got in is still unclear. It was a rainy day in Paris, but you’d expect Google’s data centers to be ready for it. The register reports that a small fire broke out first. The fact that the hardware came into contact with water during the extinguishing process currently sounds like the most plausible explanation.
Google cannot currently promise when all services will come back online. Customers affected in any way by the outage are advised to monitor the status page.
There was also good news for Google Cloud this week. The cloud provider has completed its first profitable quarter. But the celebration was short-lived.
