Apple has over 130 million active users in the European App Store

This week, Apple reported that more than 130 million active users use the App Store in Europe. The company was forced to share the numbers in order to comply with the European Digital Services Act.

The Cupertino-based company reported that the iOS App Store has 101 million active users in Europe.

European law requires Apple to disclose the number of users using the app store on almost all devices where it is present, whether it be iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS. The numbers showed a much higher number of users using the App Store through the iPhone than on other platforms.

This comes as the Cupertino-based company reported that the iOS App Store has 101 million active users in Europe. Meanwhile, the Apple store through other devices also reached a significant number of users, but much less compared to the number of active users through the iPhone.

iPadOS, one of Apple’s most used devices, came in second in terms of user count with 23 million. The following devices followed: the Mac App Store with 6 million, the tvOS App Store with 1 million, and the watchOS App Store with just under 1 million.

The company also said paid subscriptions to Apple Books and Podcasts are used by just under 1 million people per month across Europe. The Cupertino-based company said the published figures are based on data from the six months leading up to January of this year.

Apple had to comply with the Digital Services Act

The Digital Services Act sets rules for “large online platforms” with 45 million or more monthly active users. Apple treats each App Store in its operating systems as a separate platform, so only the iPhone iOS App Store is suitable as a major online platform.

Apple has said it will bring all of its app stores into compliance with the Digital Services Act, even if only the iOS app store is required by law. The DSA sets rules such as protecting children from advertising profiles, limiting the spread of false information, and others. Apple says the DSA’s goals are consistent with the company’s goal of protecting consumers.
