The era of Windows 10 is coming to an end, as Microsoft recently confirmed that the upcoming version 22H2 will be the final feature update for the popular operating system. Support for all Windows 10 22H2 editions, including Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Pro Education, Workstation Pro, and IoT Enterprise, will end on October 14, 2025, according to the tech giant.
Jason Leznek, main product manager for Windows maintenance and distribution at Microsoft, stressed the importance of moving to Windows 11, which will receive continuous feature updates. It advised users to upgrade as soon as possible to take advantage of the latest features and security updates. Despite this recommendation, Valve’s March 2023 survey and StatCounter’s Windows market share statistics show that over 73% of Windows PCs are still running Windows 10 today.
While the end of feature updates for Windows 10 may seem like bad news, Microsoft assures users that all versions will receive monthly security updates until October 14, 2025. Additionally, Long Term Service Channel (LTSC) releases will continue to receive updates based on their specific lifecycles. For example, Windows 10 LTSC editions will end mainstream support in January 2027, except for IoT Enterprise, which will be supported until January 2032.
In a separate announcement, Microsoft also announced that it plans to release a long-term version of Windows 11 in the second half of 2024. The new edition will include Windows 11 Enterprise Edition LTSC and Windows 11 Internet of Things Enterprise Edition LTSC, the first LTSC version of Windows 11 with a support cycle of up to 5 years.
