Cult victims starved to death: autopsy | Kenya

The first autopsies of bodies found in mass graves on land used by a Christian sect in a wooded area at Shakahol, in the Kenyan county of Kilifi, confirmed that the victims died of starvation, although some of them suffocated.

Authorities said they have performed the first autopsies on nine children and one woman out of 110 exhumed bodies, according to The Nation.

“Most of them had signs of starvation (…) We saw the characteristics of people who didn’t eat,” government sources said, adding that at least two of the victims showed signs of suffocation.

The Kenyan authorities have so far found the lifeless bodies of 109 people on land used by the Christian sect, although work in the area continues, so it is possible that their number will continue to grow.

As part of the investigation, the controversial TV evangelist Ezekiel Odero has been arrested and will be charged in connection with the mass death of his followers, which is confirmed by the authorities, who also closed his “prayer center”. The main leaders of the sect urge adepts to fast to death under the promise that they will meet Jesus in a new life.

“Suspicious as shepherds”

For his part, opposition leader Raila Odinga dismissed Ruto’s plans to form a commission of inquiry, stating that he, too, is just as suspicious as those he wants to investigate.

Odinga claimed without evidence that preachers associated with these deaths had installed shrines at the former official residence of Kenyan President William Ruto during his vice presidency. Similarly, he pointed out that the pastors dedicated the presidential house when the president moved.

“They didn’t stop there, these so-called pastors kept prophesying and promising miracles for how Ruto would work as president,” he said, according to The Star.

In this sense, he condemned Ruto’s attending “mega rallies” organized by these pastors, while asking the authorities to explain their relationship with them, as well as how they contributed to their campaigns or how many times they gained access to Government House . (Europe Press).
