The Samsung company has been producing folding smartphones of the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip series for several years, but soon a model with a slightly different design may be added to the lineup of such devices. The South Korean manufacturer has patented a phone that will have two hinges for folding – related documents were discovered on the website of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Rumors of a similar model have already surfaced, but aside from the possible Samsung Galaxy Z Flex name, nothing is known about it.
Of course, the documents for the patent application do not contain the features of the future smartphone, but still allow you to get an idea of what such a device might look like. Judging by the sketches, the model features a “tri-leaf” touch OLED display that is divided vertically into three equal parts by two hinges. When fully opened, it’s practically a widescreen tablet.
The patent also includes a description of the operation of the sensors in the mounting mechanism. They help determine the current state of the phone. For example, if both loops are fully open, UI elements will be displayed in all parts of the screen. If the smartphone is folded so that only one of the three parts of the screen is visible, the operating system will only display the interface there.
The patent application focuses on the operation of the software, not the assembly mechanism. This may indicate that the patent will not be delayed in a long box and that Samsung is really close to launching a real product.
