The London Metropolitan Police said this Saturday that it had arrested a total of 52 people on the day of the coronation of kings Charles III and Camilla

The London Metropolitan Police said this Saturday that it had arrested a total of 52 people on the day of the coronation of kings Charles III and Camilla for reasons related to civil unrest.

Reasons for the arrests include “fights, disorderly conduct, disorderly conduct and conspiracy to harm the community,” the police said in a statement, specifying that all of these people remain in custody.

This morning, the security forces arrested the head of the anti-monarchist organization Respublika Graham Smithtwo hours before the start of the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

The activist, along with five other members of the group, was next to a van in which they carried banners for demonstrations during the day.

“We fully understand the public’s concern about the arrests this morning,” said Commander Karen Findlay, who was in charge of the coronation security operation that involved 11,500 agents this Saturday.

Findlay stressed that “protests are legal” in the UK, but added that the police “have an obligation to intervene when a protest leads to crime and can cause serious disturbances.

“Depends on the context. A coronation is a unique, once-in-a-generation event, and this is a key issue in our assessment,” the commander explained, stressing that the demonstration with “many participants” took place today “without police intervention.”

Among the arrests reported by the Metropolitan Police, 14 were made on Mall Avenue leading to Buckingham Palace, where the royal procession took place before and after the religious ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
