On the occasion of World Password Day, the State Special Communications and Information Protection Service explained how to create a reliable password for e-mail boxes, pages on social networks and other accounts.
According to Ukrinform, the State Special Communications Service reported this on Telegram.
It is stated that the use of “strong” passwords for banking applications, e-mail boxes, pages in social networks or other accounts is one of the basic rules of cyber hygiene, the observance of which helps protect data from theft.
The State Security Service reminded that a reliable password must contain more than eight characters: uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.
The use of passwords is effective. This is a string of words encrypted by the user. For example, in a line from a poem or song spaces are removed, some letters are replaced with numbers, special characters, some letters are converted to uppercase.
A strong password can also be created using custom password generation services.
It is important to have a separate, unique password for each account.
If you have trouble remembering a large number of complex passwords, you can use password managers – these are programs that act as a kind of “vault” that allows you to keep passwords safe thanks to encryption. You can use password managers on both computers and smartphones. When choosing, it is better to give preference to programs from well-known developers before installation, check the reputation of the product, study reviews about security.
The State Security Service also warned against the use of simple words, common letter and word combinations, repeating or successive symbols in passwords.
The service states that “123456, qwerty, password and similar combinations are strictly prohibited, hackers crack such passwords in less than a second.”
You should not use your own name, surname, date of birth or other personal information as a password. The same applies to the names, surnames and any personal information of relatives.
It is important not to store passwords in easily accessible months or places where everyone can see them. It is also better not to save passwords in browsers.
If there is even the slightest suspicion that the password has been compromised, it should be changed immediately.
Additionally, State Special Communications recommended regular checking of passwords and mailing addresses for leaks. For example, with the help of this site.
As reported by Ukrinform, the amount of losses of market participants from illegal transactions with payment cards last year amounted to UAH 481 million, increasing by 46% compared to 2021.
