For scientist Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called “godfather of AI”, an artificial intelligence like ChatGPT is already 1,000 times smarter than a normal person. He even argues that it will become even more aggravating and that in the coming years we will see how it overcomes the entire collective intelligence of our society. For a professional, the chances of losing control of this technology are 40% – which is too high compared to other parameters, for example, the plane will not take off with a 10% chance of crashing.

He claims to have a full understanding of what he created back in 1980. At that time, he and two students developed a backpropagation neural network algorithm. This allows machines to learn from examples and acquire knowledge. Today he says that this puts us in a position below AI. “The algorithm we created in the 1980s is more efficient than the human brain. Today’s great language models can know more than a human, with far fewer connections.”

The example he presented shows that while the brain contains 10 trillion connections in our head, the GPT-4 that powers ChatGPT only has 1 trillion. “This is a new form of intelligence, without energy restrictions and innate malformations of biological evolution.” And Hinton predicts that we will soon see their evolution. “Existing models are not yet trained to develop complex logical reasoning. This is possible if these technologies achieve their goals.”

His thoughts align with a letter that was signed in support of an end to AI research and signed by figures such as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

He did this on the eve of the emergence of Google Bard, a new artificial intelligence that will take over the management of the company’s entire ecosystem.
