Beyond our sky, about 25 light-years away, lies the Fomalhaut star system, a starry wonderland full of surprises and mysteries. In a recent study published in Nature Astronomy, a team of scientists, mostly from the University of Arizona and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, showed that Fomalhaut is much more complex than we expected.

Surrounding the 440-million-year-old Fomalhaut is a debris field that scientists have known since 1983. However, they did not expect to find three separate belts of debris surrounding the star. The inner belt is comparable to our solar system’s asteroid belt, but much larger and extends from the star from about seven AU to about 80 AU. To put these numbers in perspective, the width of the inner asteroid belt is about 10 times wider than astronomers had estimated.

But the most intriguing discovery is a second belt of debris located outside the inner asteroid belt. This belt of debris is inclined 23 degrees relative to everything else in the star’s orbit, making it a truly unique aspect of the system. According to the study’s lead author, András Gaspar, the oblique belt may be the result of planets orbiting Fomalhaut, which astronomers have yet to discover.

One of the astronomers involved in the study, George Riecke, likens the Fomalhaut system to a mystery novel. “Where are the planets?” He asks. “To say that there is probably a really interesting planetary system around a star is not a big step.”

Launched as early as 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope has proven to be a vital tool for studying the Fomalhaut system. Infrared sensors provide astronomers with unprecedented detail when studying the composition and distribution of debris fields. This telescope will allow us to delve deeper into Fomalhaut’s mysteries and potentially uncover planets responsible for the peculiar structure of the system’s debris belt.
