What to expect from Google I/O?
One of the big announcements will be the new major language model (LLM), PaLM 2, described as a “general purpose” LLM, which is Google’s “latest and most advanced” development. According to CNBC, LLM apparently performs “a wide range of coding and math tests, as well as creative writing and analysis tests”. The first PaLM was announced in April 2022, a few months before the last AI explosion powered by services like ChatGPT.
Google will also reportedly announce “productive experiences” for its Search service, as well as the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot Bard, which the company experimentally launched in March. Bard is currently only available in the US and UK, but will now expand to Japanese and Korean.
Also, Google will reveal more Workspace-centric AI toolsSpecifically, it will “discuss the creation of templates in tables and the rendering of images in Slides and Meet.” The company announced the AI features for Gmail and Docs in March, but first made it available to “trusted testers.”
The company did not comment on the CNBC story. There’s only a few hours until I/O starts, so he’ll be making all the announcements at the conference. With the advent of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s AI efforts, and the emergence of numerous other competitors, Google is putting AI at the forefront of pretty much everything it does.
