Over 700,000 people have fled their homes in Sudan become internally displaced as a result of fighting that began a month ago between the Sudanese army and paramilitary groups, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which warned the number is “more than double” what it was just a week ago.

Particularly on Tuesday last week The UN registered 340,000 displaced persons. the current wave of violence in a country that already had 3.7 million internally displaced people prior to the current crisis. In addition, more than 100,000 people have been forced to flee to neighboring countries, although the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) fears that the number of border crossings will exceed 800,000 if the situation continues.

IOM spokesman Paul Dillan explained in a telematic speech that most internally displaced persons live with relatives, while others prefer to take refuge in schools, mosques or other public buildings. Dillan appreciated the “generosity” of the local population it “opened the door” for those fleeing violence, although it warned of the “tremendous pressure” that this entailed.

The UN says it can deliver humanitarian aid unhindered after several agencies and organizations have condemned the attacks over the past three weeks and looting against their personnel and facilities. “Fighting must stop and humanitarian workers must be able to return to work helping those most in need before things get out of control,” Dillan said.

Death toll from fighting that broke out in mid-April in Sudan between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) increased to more than 600, according to data provided by the World Health Organization (WHO).

WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic indicated during the briefing that Sudan’s Ministry of Health has so far confirmed 604 killed and 5127 wounded in clashes, at a time when the international community is trying to mediate to bring about a cessation of hostilities.

Jasarevic also condemned the attacks in recent weeks. against medical institutions and ruled that they “seriously undermine the ability of Sudanese to seek medical care”. “We condemn all attacks on the health sector,” he said.
