Wozniak’s comments come two months after he and other tech leaders, including Elon Musk, signed an open letter calling for a slowdown in the development of powerful AI models.

In an interview with the BBC, Wozniak said that AI is “open to bad actors, those who want to deceive you about who they are”. While he believes that AI won’t replace humans in the workplace due to a lack of emotion, he fears bad actors could use conversational AI chatbots to create texts that sound credible to the public.

Wozniak argues that publishers of AI-written text have an obligation to label it as such, and regulation is needed to hold big tech companies accountable.

People really have to take responsibility for what AI produces,
– said.

However, Wozniak also expressed skepticism about regulators’ ability to control the use of AI, adding that “money-hungry forces often win.”

Speaking to investors last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would be “deliberate and thoughtful” about integrating AI into its products. Wozniak didn’t name a specific company in his comments, but said tech companies “think they can get away with everything.”

Despite his concerns, Wozniak does not believe that AI development can be stopped. Instead, he advocates educating people to help them recognize when their personal data is at risk from fraud. As AI continues to evolve and become stronger, we will see if regulatory measures can keep up with the technology’s potential for abuse.
